A Firewall is a means of controlling network access to a system.  This is usually in the context of preventing intrusion from the internet to a private system.  Firewalls may be in the form of either hardware devices or software applications.  Hardware firewalls may be standalone devices, or are frequently combined with ADSL (broadband) routers,  Software firewalls may be dedicated applications, combined with anti-virus, or like Windows Firewall, built into an operating system.

Firewall exceptions may need to be added to systems to allow them to fulfil specific functions, such as mail-server or web-server.
