Voice Over IP uses Internet Protocol technology rather than traditional methods to provide telephone services. Generally speaking, this can offer additional features and it is particularly good for linking distant locations such as offices in other countries at reduced cost.  Downsides can include issues of speech quality (echoes, breaking up) and security.
