Office 2010 cannot verify license

If having installed Office 2010 you later change its Product Key, you may then get the error message "Cannot Verify License" when you open an Office program. The message suggests you Repair Office, which does not seem to work.

The solution is to change the system date of the PC back to shortly after Office 2010 was installed.  You may want to stop the Windows Time Service while you do this, to ensure that the date does not revert on its own.

Having changed the system date, enter the Product Key as usual through Programs and Features, Microsoft Office 2010, Change.  Check by opening an Office program that the license is activated (do File, Help and look on the right-hand side).  If all is well, set the computer system date back to today's date, and restart the Windows Time service.

It is unclear what causes this issue.  It may be something to do with the demonstration period you are allowed after installing the product.
